TEETH WHITENING LEEDS

Brighten Your Smile With

ENLIGHTEN

If your teeth have become lacklustre, discoloured, or even stained, the last thing you want to do is to show them off. A bright smile is often a sign of healthy, well-looked after teeth. But when yours don’t sparkle and shine as bright as you’d like, it can leave you self-conscious about smiling.

Discolouration and staining aren’t always a sign of neglect. Throughout our daily lives, we often expose our teeth to a variety of things that alter their colour. Those essential cups of tea and coffee are often a common culprit for staining, as are dark berries, spicy foods, and that occasional glass of red wine.

Fortunately, you can still enjoy life’s pleasures in moderation. At Leeds Dental Clinic, we offer the popular Enlighten teeth whitening treatment.

This revolutionary at-home product is one of the best-performing treatments available and can brighten your smile to a vita shade B1; that’s the most natural white possible.

HOW DOES
ENLIGHTEN WORK?

Enlighten is an at-home treatment. This means that you’ll be able to whiten your teeth from the comfort of your own home.
To make sure you have custom-made whitening trays that are the perfect fit, we’ll take all of the necessary impressions of your teeth during an initial consultation. Ahead of your treatment, we’ll also provide you with a special type of toothpaste that will strengthen the enamel on your teeth. This will help reduce any sensitivity when exposed to the whitening gel itself.

The treatment process itself takes two weeks, during this time you’ll wear the whitening trays filled with a special gel that gradually brightens and refreshes your smile.

By wearing your trays each night, the active ingredients in the whitening gel will pass through the enamel of your teeth. Through a process called chemical oxidation, the stains on your teeth will start to break down.

After two weeks of wearing your whitening trays at home each night, we’ll get you back into the clinic for one final treatment. This appointment will take roughly 40 minutes, and it will perfect your new smile.

THE BENEFITS
OF ENLIGHTEN

We believe that Enlighten is the most effective at-home whitening treatment available. Not only can it brighten your teeth by up to 16 shades, it causes minimal sensitivity in the process.

Whitening your teeth can take time, but because Enlighten can be used at home, the process is far easier for you. You can relax while the whitening gel sets to work. Enlighten has a very high success rate and is completely safe.

A brighter smile can go a long way to lifting your confidence, and we’re certain that when you see the results, you’ll want to show them off. Best of all, you can look great and still enjoy your.

I visited Dr Hassan’s new clinic yesterday, was thoroughly impressed! It’s a superb setting with beautiful decor and lots of attention to detail! The surgery itself is outstanding and the cleanliness is second to none. Victoria was the dentist I saw and was lovely and friendly as was her assistant. I have been a client of Dr Hassan’s now for many years and have no hesitation in recommending his new surgery to anyone needing specialist dental care…

Hassan and his co-pilot Victoria are world class implant clinicians, who also teach their philosophy in their renowned teaching academy; BAIRD. This new bespoke clinic is truly outstanding and I’d have no hesitation in recommending patients in West Yorkshire and beyond to come here for their implant and aesthetic work. The clinic is easily accessible off the motorway and not far from Leeds City centre, with plenty of parking.

Having had treatment on various dental clinics due to relocating and poor service I can positively say the treatment I’ve received at Leeds Dental Clinic has been outstanding and unique. Dr Rania Omar and rest of the team had gone the extra mile to treat and better the health of my tooth…

TEETH WHITENING - Frequently Asked Questions

Teeth whitening is a gentle, non-invasive dental treatment designed to brighten your smile by lightening the shade of your natural teeth. This popular cosmetic procedure effectively reduces discolouration and staining, helping to restore the natural lustre of your smile and boost your confidence when speaking and laughing in social situations.

Understanding Professional Teeth Whitening Treatments

Professional teeth whitening uses specially formulated dental-grade bleaching agents that are significantly more effective than over-the-counter products. These professional treatments are carefully monitored by dental professionals to ensure both safety and optimal results for your unique smile.

The Science Behind Whitening Processes

Teeth whitening works through a process called oxidation. The active ingredients in professional whitening gels—typically carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide—penetrate the porous outer layer of your teeth (enamel) and reach the deeper dentine layer where most stains reside. As these peroxide compounds break down, they release oxygen molecules that react with the discoloured molecules in your teeth, effectively breaking the bonds that hold stains together. This chemical reaction changes the molecular structure of the staining compounds, neutralising their colour and leaving your teeth noticeably brighter.

Types of Dental Discolouration Addressed

Teeth whitening can effectively treat various forms of discolouration, particularly extrinsic stains—those that affect the outer layer of your teeth. These common stains often result from lifestyle factors such as consuming tea, coffee, red wine, and certain foods with strong pigmentation. Tobacco use is another significant contributor to tooth discolouration. Professional whitening can also improve some intrinsic stains—those within the tooth structure—though these may require more intensive treatment approaches.

Professional Whitening Methods for Brightening Smiles

Dental practices typically offer several approaches to teeth whitening, each with its own advantages and protocols to suit different lifestyles and preferences.

In-Chair Power Whitening Techniques

In-chair whitening (sometimes called power whitening) is performed in the dental practice and typically takes 60-90 minutes. This method uses higher-concentration whitening gels applied to your teeth after your gums are carefully protected. Many systems enhance the whitening process using specialised lights or lasers that activate the gel, accelerating the breakdown of stains. This approach offers immediate results, making it ideal for those seeking a rapid smile transformation.

Customised Home Whitening Systems

Take-home whitening systems provide a more gradual approach to brightening your smile from the comfort of your home. Your dentist will create custom-fitted trays that precisely match the contours of your teeth, ensuring even coverage of the whitening gel and minimising contact with sensitive gum tissues. These bespoke trays, combined with professional-strength whitening gel, deliver significant brightening over a treatment period of typically 1-2 weeks, depending on your desired shade improvement.

Each whitening method has its place in modern cosmetic dentistry, and many patients achieve their best results through a combination of approaches. Your dentist will evaluate your specific needs, considering factors such as the type and extent of discolouration, the condition of your teeth, and your lifestyle preferences before recommending the most suitable whitening protocol for your smile.

Professional teeth whitening can refresh and revitalise many smiles, helping to restore confidence and brightness that may have diminished over time. This popular treatment offers benefits for a wide range of people, though certain factors influence who will achieve the most satisfying results.

Ideal Candidates for Teeth Whitening Treatments

Professional whitening treatment can be transformative for many patients, particularly those whose teeth have become discoloured due to lifestyle factors rather than internal dental issues.

Common Discolouration Concerns

Those who experience staining from regular consumption of pigmented food and beverages often see excellent results with professional whitening. If your smile has gradually lost its sparkle due to daily cups of tea or coffee, the occasional glass of red wine, or foods with strong colouring such as curries or berries, you’re likely to be an excellent candidate for whitening. Smokers or former smokers can also benefit significantly, as professional-grade treatments can help reduce the yellowish or brownish discolouration typically associated with tobacco use.

Age-Related Brightness Restoration

As we age, our teeth naturally tend to darken and lose their youthful brightness. This occurs as enamel gradually thins, allowing more of the yellowish dentine beneath to show through. Additionally, years of exposure to staining substances creates a cumulative effect on tooth colour. Professional whitening can help counteract these natural changes, restoring a more youthful appearance to your smile and complementing an overall refreshed look.

Health Prerequisites for Whitening Candidacy

While many people can benefit from teeth whitening, the best results occur when certain health conditions are met before treatment begins.

Dental Health Foundations

Good candidates for teeth whitening typically have generally healthy teeth and gums without active decay or periodontal disease. If you have untreated cavities, your dentist will likely address these before proceeding with whitening, as the whitening agents could potentially cause discomfort if they reach the sensitive inner pulp through decayed areas. Similarly, gum inflammation should be resolved before whitening to prevent potential irritation from the bleaching materials.

Restoration Considerations

It’s important to understand that dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, and composite fillings don’t respond to whitening treatments. If you have visible restorations in your smile, whitening your natural teeth may create a colour mismatch. Your dentist will evaluate your existing dental work and may recommend replacing certain restorations after whitening to ensure a harmonious result across your entire smile.

Special Considerations for Whitening Treatments

Certain individuals may require modified approaches to teeth whitening or might find alternative cosmetic treatments more suitable for their specific concerns.

Sensitivity Management Approaches

If you have naturally sensitive teeth, you can still enjoy the benefits of professional whitening. Your dentist can recommend protocols that minimise discomfort, such as using lower-concentration whitening agents, shorter application times, or special desensitising products before and after treatment. Take-home systems with custom trays often work well for those with sensitivity, as they allow for more gradual whitening with greater control over the process.

Pregnancy and Whitening Timing

Although no research indicates that whitening treatments are harmful during pregnancy, most dental professionals recommend postponing elective cosmetic procedures until after delivery and breastfeeding. This cautious approach ensures the utmost safety for both mother and baby. If you’re planning to become pregnant, you might consider completing your whitening treatment beforehand.

A thorough assessment by your dentist is the best way to determine if teeth whitening is suitable for your specific situation. During your consultation, your dental team will evaluate factors such as the cause and extent of your discolouration, your overall oral health, and your expectations to recommend the most appropriate whitening approach for your smile.

Teeth whitening at a dental practice combines scientific precision with personalised care to deliver safe, effective results. The process typically involves several stages, from initial assessment through to treatment completion, all designed to ensure you achieve the brightest, most natural-looking smile possible.

Initial Consultation for Teeth Whitening Treatment

Before any whitening begins, your dentist will conduct a thorough assessment to determine the most appropriate approach for your specific needs and to ensure your teeth are suitable for whitening treatment.

Comprehensive Dental Examination

Your whitening journey begins with a detailed examination of your teeth and gums. Your dentist will check for any conditions that should be addressed before whitening, such as cavities, gum inflammation, or exposed root surfaces. This examination may include dental X-rays to detect any hidden issues that could affect your treatment. Your dentist will also identify the type and cause of your tooth discolouration, as this influences which whitening approach will be most effective for your situation.

Shade Assessment and Goal Setting

Using a dental shade guide—a standardised tool that showcases the spectrum of tooth colours—your dentist will determine your current tooth shade and discuss your desired outcome. This baseline measurement allows for objective tracking of your whitening progress. During this consultation, your dentist will also explain what results you can realistically expect based on your starting shade and the nature of your discolouration, ensuring your expectations align with achievable outcomes.

Professional Whitening Treatment Options

Dental practices typically offer two main approaches to teeth whitening: in-chair (or power) whitening performed at the practice, and professionally supervised home whitening using custom-made trays. Many patients achieve optimal results through a combination of both methods.

In-Chair Whitening Procedures

If you opt for in-chair whitening, the process typically begins with thorough cleaning to remove any surface stains and plaque. Your dentist will then apply protective barriers to your gums and soft tissues to prevent irritation from the whitening gel. The high-concentration whitening agent is carefully applied to your teeth, and in many systems, a special light or laser is used to activate or enhance the whitening process. The gel is typically applied in multiple sessions within the same appointment, with each application lasting around 15-20 minutes. Throughout the treatment, your dentist monitors your progress and ensures your comfort.

Home Whitening with Custom Trays

For home whitening systems, your dentist will take precise impressions of your teeth to create custom-fitted trays that conform perfectly to your dental arches. These bespoke trays are designed to hold the whitening gel in optimal contact with your teeth while minimising overflow onto sensitive gum tissues. You’ll receive detailed instructions on how to apply the professional-grade whitening gel and how long to wear the trays each day. The treatment typically continues for 1-2 weeks, depending on your desired level of whitening. During this period, you may have a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment protocol.

Post-Whitening Care and Assessment

Once your whitening treatment is complete, your dentist will provide guidance on maintaining your results and may schedule a final assessment to document your transformation.

Sensitivity Management Protocols

Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during or after whitening treatments. Your dentist will recommend appropriate products and strategies to manage any discomfort, such as specialised toothpastes containing potassium nitrate or fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel. These measures typically resolve sensitivity within a few days of completing your whitening treatment.

Whether you choose in-chair whitening for immediate results or a gradual home whitening programme, your dentist will tailor the approach to your specific needs and provide support throughout the process. This professional guidance ensures you achieve the best possible whitening results while maintaining the health of your teeth and gums.

Professional teeth whitening can dramatically transform your smile, but understanding realistic expectations about both initial results and their longevity helps ensure your satisfaction with the treatment. The outcome varies for each individual, influenced by several factors unique to your teeth and lifestyle.

Achievable Whitening Results for Different Smiles

Professional whitening treatments typically deliver significant brightness improvements, though the exact results depend on your starting point and the nature of your discolouration.

Shade Improvement Possibilities

Most patients can expect their teeth to lighten by several shades following a complete professional whitening treatment. For context, the dental shade guide (which dentists use to measure tooth colour) typically ranges from darkest (C4) to brightest (B1). Many patients achieve a shift of 5-8 shades, though results of up to 16 shades are possible with certain systems. This improvement can transform a smile from noticeably yellow or dull to bright and vibrant. The most dramatic results are usually seen in teeth stained by lifestyle factors such as coffee, tea, or tobacco use.

Natural-Looking Brightness Enhancement

Professional whitening aims to achieve results that look natural rather than artificially white. The optimal shade for your smile depends on factors such as your skin tone, age, and facial features. Your dentist will guide you toward a result that brightens your smile while maintaining a natural appearance that complements your overall look. The goal is a refreshed, vibrant smile that enhances your appearance without looking obviously artificial or “too white” to be believable.

Longevity of Teeth Whitening Results

The duration of your whitening results depends significantly on both your oral care routine and your lifestyle habits following treatment.

Typical Duration of Whitening Effects

With good oral hygiene and some attention to stain prevention, professional whitening results typically last between 1-3 years. However, this timeframe varies considerably based on individual factors. Some patients maintain their results for several years, while others, particularly those who consume significant amounts of staining substances, may notice gradual colour regression sooner. Most people find that a simple touch-up treatment once or twice a year helps maintain their desired level of brightness.

Factors Affecting Whitening Stability

Several key factors influence how long your whitening results will last. Consumption of staining foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark berries can gradually diminish whitening effects. Tobacco use significantly accelerates colour regression. Oral hygiene practices play a crucial role, as plaque accumulation can make teeth appear duller and more yellow. Age also affects longevity, as enamel naturally thins over time, revealing more of the yellowish dentine beneath. Finally, genetics influence how quickly your teeth absorb stains and how they respond to whitening treatments.

Maintaining Optimal Whitening Over Time

Understanding how to preserve your whitening results helps you enjoy your brighter smile for as long as possible.

Touch-Up Treatment Protocols

To maintain your preferred level of brightness, periodic touch-up treatments are recommended. If you’ve had in-chair whitening, you may receive a custom home whitening kit for occasional maintenance. For those using home whitening systems from the start, simply retaining your custom trays allows for easy touch-ups when needed. These maintenance sessions typically require just 1-2 applications, significantly less than your initial treatment. Your dentist can recommend an appropriate touch-up schedule based on how quickly your teeth tend to accumulate new stains.

Integrating Whitening-Friendly Habits

Certain daily practices can help preserve your whitening results. Using a straw when drinking staining beverages reduces their contact with your teeth. Rinsing with water after consuming potentially staining foods or drinks helps wash away pigments before they can settle into the tooth surface. Incorporating a whitening toothpaste into your routine (as recommended by your dentist) can help remove surface stains before they become established.

The investment in professional teeth whitening continues to deliver value as long as you follow your dentist’s maintenance recommendations. With appropriate care and occasional touch-ups, you can enjoy a brighter, more confident smile for years to come.

Maintaining your newly whitened smile involves adopting specific oral hygiene practices and making mindful lifestyle adjustments. With proper care, you can extend the brightness of your teeth and reduce the frequency of touch-up treatments, allowing you to enjoy your confident smile for longer periods.

Daily Maintenance Routines for Whitened Smiles

Preserving your whitening results begins with excellent oral hygiene and attentive care of your dental enamel. A consistent routine helps prevent new stains from developing while protecting the health of your teeth.

Targeted Brushing Techniques

Brush your teeth at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Your dentist may recommend a whitening toothpaste for occasional use (typically 2-3 times weekly) to help remove surface stains before they become established. However, avoid using whitening toothpastes exclusively, as their abrasive properties could potentially weaken enamel over time. Consider using an electric toothbrush, as these have been shown to remove surface stains more effectively than manual brushing alone.

Interdental Cleaning Importance

Daily flossing and interdental cleaning are essential for maintaining a bright smile. Staining substances can accumulate between teeth where brushing cannot reach, gradually affecting the appearance of your smile. Using dental floss, interdental brushes, or water flossers helps remove these hidden deposits and prevents the formation of plaque, which can make teeth appear duller and more yellow.

Lifestyle Adjustments for Whitening Longevity

Several everyday choices can significantly impact how long your whitening results last. Making small adjustments to your habits can help preserve your brighter smile without dramatically changing your lifestyle.

Stain-Prevention Strategies

Consider the “white shirt test” when making dietary choices—if a food or beverage would stain a white shirt, it will likely stain your teeth over time. When enjoying staining beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, or cola, try using a straw to minimise contact with your front teeth. Whenever possible, rinse your mouth with water after consuming pigmented foods or drinks to wash away staining compounds before they can settle into the tooth surface. For particularly dedicated whitening maintenance, consider briefly brushing your teeth after consuming staining substances, waiting at least 30 minutes if the food or drink was acidic.

Professional Maintenance Appointments

Regular dental hygiene appointments every six months help maintain your whitening results through professional cleaning that removes surface stains and tartar buildup. During these visits, your dental team can also assess your whitening results and recommend appropriate timing for touch-up treatments. Most patients benefit from brief touch-up whitening sessions every 6-18 months, depending on their lifestyle habits and how quickly their teeth accumulate new stains.

Your personal maintenance routine may need adjustment based on how your teeth respond to whitening and your particular lifestyle. Your dentist can provide customised advice based on your specific situation to help you enjoy your brighter smile for as long as possible.
