ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Protecting Your Oral Health With

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

When severe toothache strikes, it can impact all aspects of your life. Work and social plans take a backseat to discomfort, and chewing is probably the last thing you want to do. But this pain may indicate something serious happening beneath your tooth’s surface.

Root canal infections usually come with considerable pain and sensitivity, and promptly addressing them is vital to prevent necrosis. Along with the death of your tooth, abscesses and other health problems are also a concern.

Here at Leeds Dental Clinic, we use the latest technology and techniques to ensure maximum effectiveness and minimum discomfort from our root canal treatments.

WHAT IS AN INFECTED ROOT CANAL?

Inside every tooth, there is an area known as the pulp chamber. This chamber is home to the dental pulp — a combination of connective tissue, nerves, blood vessels, and odontoblasts.

Your dental pulp will spread down into the root canals of your teeth. Each tooth can have up to four roots deeply embedded in your jaw.

Decay that’s not identified early will penetrate the outer enamel and dentin layers and allow bacteria to enter and work further into the tooth. The result is an infected root canal.

In addition to pain and discomfort, root canal infections may cause swollen, discoloured gums around the tooth with green or yellow pus discharges. Occasionally, you may experience swelling, tenderness, or discomfort in your face and neck.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

If you’re experiencing the symptoms of a root canal infection, we recommend making an appointment at Leeds Dental Clinic as soon as possible. During your consultation, we’ll use the latest equipment to assess the infection’s spread.

Root canal treatment is the best way to save your tooth and prevent further oral and general health complications. The earlier we can do this, the better the chances of preserving your tooth.

To ensure the process is pain and discomfort free, we’ll use a local anaesthetic to numb the treatment site. Next, we’ll enter your tooth and extract the infected pulp and bacteria.

While performing your root canal treatment, we’ll use up-to-date research-informed processes and imaging technology to achieve the best results.

After extracting the infected pulp, we’ll use a gutta-percha to seal the area. Gutta-percha is a biologically inert and naturally occurring rubber-like substance from Malaysian trees.

Once sealed, we’ll close the tooth with a filling. We may also later cap the tooth with a crown.

THE BENEFITS OF ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Any major dental work can cause worry and doubt, and you may think it might be better to lose the tooth or have it extracted than undergo a root canal procedure; however, this is not the case.

Extraction can impact your oral health, causing dental drifting, decreasing jaw bone density, and increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Because of these concerns, we’d only remove your tooth as a last resort.

The high success rate of root canal treatments means we can prevent necrosis and restore your tooth to good health. Often, we can perform root canal treatment in one appointment and provide immediate relief from the symptoms of infection.

The anaesthetic used in our root canal treatments ensures minimal discomfort. By removing the infected pulp, you’ll avoid abscesses and prevent the tooth’s death. In extreme cases, an untreated root canal infection can spread to the jaw, face, and blood.

Honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had at any dental/medical clinic. All the staff were so sweet, the place was clean, organised and had a nice aroma as you walk in. There is no other dental practice I’d recommend other than this one.
